Salkantay Day 1: Cold has a new meaning
I
n our inability to make plans in advance, we were unable to book the true Inca Trail. The bookings are full around 6 months in advance, and there was no way we could have known when we would be in Peru, let alone Cuzco. We chose to do an alternate trek up the the mysteriously beautiful Machu Picchu. We chose the Salkantay 5 day trek. As I already stated we met our group which included, Carlos our guide. The two Australians, Patty and Renee. The fellow Americans Mary and Brandon. The day started early with a sardine can on wheels. We drove for a few hours through the town of Mollepata to the trail head at Cruzpata (3,200m).
The first day was rather relaxed, we hiked around 5 total hours to our campsite at Soraypampa (3,850). It was a good chance to get to know our fellow trekkers and get a good warm up for tomorrow. Laura was saddened to find out that after leaving Philadelphia (Mary and Brandon are from the Philly area) this winter, they have since opened a Chipotle restaurant, her favorite.
The camp site was great, in the valley below some stunning snow capped peaks.
It was chilly when we arrived, and would become down right cold through the night. We tried to keep warm in a small hut while we ate dinner and the longest game of crazy 8´s there has ever been. I am sorry Renee, but there had to be a loser! We all did our best Australian accents, had some laughs, and hit the tents, hoping that our heart rates would hold through the night. It was the coldest I have ever been in my life
