Redefining tan lines
R
edefining tan linesWe decided that we weren´t tan enough and that our car needed a beach holiday as well. We made it to Armientes on the coast thinking the ferry was not until the morning. It ended up being way too expensive to take the car, so we parked her at the local fire station, which in their free time doubled as a parking garage. Stepping foot in Bocas is like transporting yourself straight to the Caribbean. They speak a weird language that is a combination of Spanish and English, however, even if you speak both, you can´t understand a thing. We decided to do the touristy day tour of the islands.
It included some snorkeling, dolphins, and a relaxing bit on a secluded beach including poisonous red frogs.
The boy was so nice to pick up and handle the ferocious beast in a leaf for our enjoyment.
Laura couldn´t resist heading to her favorite restaurant on the island for some dinner, but wanted to remind our good friend Fabian not to worry, we brush after every meal. After two nights of the main island, we decided to head for a little more of a secluded place. We took a water taxi over to Isla Bastamientos. We stayed at my favorite place on the trip yet. It is owned by a English guy and his Colombian wife, with their adorable bilingual 4 year old daughter Naomi.
They had a great place and we stayed in the loft upstairs equipped with a trap door and all. The town was a great place, with a couple of restaurants, a grocery store, and a bar that could literally blow the shirt right off you back. You can hear the bar from anywhere in town, and it takes you a few shouting attempts to order a drink. The island is home to the main beaches of the region, but the surf is too strong to reach them by boat, so the only way is to trek across the island. The first beach is only a half hour walk in dry weather, having rained the previous night, it took us closer to an hour, including feet covered in mud.
But the beach is secluded, and I got to pretend I was a little kid, flipping over waves with reckless abandon. I don´t remember the last time I had so much salt water up my nose.
We decided the next day to just head back to the less secluded beach as it was a little easier to get to, and they sold beer. I got a lot of reading done, and completed my set of new white board shorts that I can never take off. Most likely the tannest I have ever been in my life. I think we soaked up a little too much little too much sun and decided it was time to get back on the road. We headed back to the mainland and upon reaching the car we found she had some company while we were gone. Another van in the lot had Colorado license plates, so she was in good company while we were enjoying the sun. We hit the road hoping to get far into Costa Rica before it got dark
