e headed back across the lake and to our car, but first it was the girls time to shine, shopping. Panachel on the main side of the lake is a great place to find artisan crafts and great presents. After helping them haggle for some things, the car felt a little heavier. We won't say if who, but someone got ripped off! Laura made a few more purchases for her quilt, and we hit the road with a full tank of gas, and a good play list
. We also learned some things about each other. We learned, that the girls sometimes needed to close their eyes until they got used to the different style of driving down here. Also we learned that bumpy roads make the girls have to go pee. The road was windy and a bit stressful, I also had a little something eating away at my soul. Football season started yesterday. For those that don't know me, I bleed blue and orange. It was highly unlikely that I would be able to watch the Broncos season opener in the small town of Nebaj.
We got into town, and headed for the local market. I thought I was used to the markets down here, until I forgot that I am quite a bit taller than most people and almost took down an awning with my forehead.
The girls got their first Latin American market experience, and the smell of raw meat proved to be too much, we headed out. We stopped into a shop where a lady was making textiles by hand
. They normally take her a month, it was interesting to see each knot tied by hand. On our way back from the market, we heard some shouting coming from a window above us. It was a group of kids hiding behind windows and trying to get our attention. One girl kept yelling lindo at me, and then ducking behind the window. What can I say, I have a way with the ladies!
We went to one of the only restaurants in town, and to our (near heart stopping) surprise, the game was going to be on. We headed to the corner store, where they actually sell Denver soda (Orange flavor! Destiny right?)
, and got a few snacks, which included a "literal" handfull of gummy bears. It would prove to make me happy for the next few days, as we got to watch my beloved Broncos walk all over the men in black 41-14. The day was absolutely complete, when I found out both the Chargers and Chiefs both lost. Hopefully this is a sign that I may find some luck watching games. We will find out next week if they like football in Belize! For now, off to another small town nestled in the Guatemalan highlands
.
