With our planned fishing trip cancelled, we set out to explore the coastal town. We started at the Indian Heritage Center, where we learned about Totem carving and a little more about the native arts. Before you get excited and think about putting a totem in your yard, like I did, they can run from $2,500-$3,000 per foot.
Haines is one of the mostly densely populated Bald Eagle habitats in the world. The eagles fly in for the Salmon run, and compete for the plethora of food. The also have a eagle sanctuary where the rehabilitate injured eagles, most commonly hurt by cars, or power lines.
We had no idea, and not sure anyone would, but the movie White Fang was filmed in Haines. They still have the old time town movie set where the movie was filmed. They are actual buildings and they hold their farmers markets there. But more importantly in one of the buildings is the Haines Brewery. We sampled most of the beers they had, and then tried them again. Our two favorites are Black Fang (the evil brother black lager) and Spruce Tip lager (brewed with fresh spruce tips instead of hops). We hung around the brewery a little and got to know the staff, and Laura got to whack the bung with the bung hammer.

To cap off a full day, we decided to take a float tour of Chilkoot Lake. Unfortunately we were a little early for the salmon run, so we didn't see a lot of wildlife, but it was a relaxing foggy trip.
