Totemly Awesome

We headed back to the Cassiar and our journey south.  The pacific northwest is know for its totem poles, but I have never seen totems like the ones we saw in Kitwancool and Kitwanga.  They are some original and authentic poles that have been standing for some time.  We learned that the totems are considered alive, and they are to be undisturbed, even if they fall.  We heard a story about a totem falling, and they had to reroute a road in order to leave the totem where it lied.

We stopped in Old Hazelton and crossed the bridge into 'Ksan, a recreation of a historical native village.  Then we headed up to Kispiox to see more totems and we met Dan who is carving a totem for the Frog clan.  Unfortunately, he can't tell the story of the totem, as it is the story of the Chief, and if he were to tell it, it would be considered gossip, and none of Dan's business.  After a totemly awesome day, we moved on and crashed in Vanderhoof for the night.
