We rolled into the small town (no ATMs) of Chalten, named for the native word for smoking tower. The Fitz Roy tower is said to glow red in early morning light. We headed for a lake about an hour drive out of town

. After an hour and a half of trying to rattle the bumper off on the dirt road we decided to turn around.

Instead we headed to bed preparing for a hike the next day. We were not sure what the weather would be like, so we came prepared. The book said it was a 4 hour hike one way. We hiked for an hour and came to a beautiful mirador (this word now haunts my dreams).

We took a Christmas card picture for my mom, and almost turned back.

We decided to hike on a little further, once we saw the path up the hill the challenge took over us. We did not make it to Lago de Los Tres until after 1pm.

That nice challenging path ended up being a scramble up a rock field, and we brought way too much stuff. This is where we coined the phrase fitzroy. It basically takes the place of screw up, thus we fitzroyed ourselves. We were absolutely drained when we reached the car. We had completed the hike intending to head to Calafate that night to save some time, and have a day of rest. However, the car did not start, dead battery! We were able to get a jump, get some snacks and head out to Calafate.
