Ruta Cuarenta

We headed south from Esquel today, hitting the rough but beautiful Highway 40 (Ruta Cuarenta). This is the only highway running North and South in the interior of Argentina. It runs from Beriloche all the way down to the border crossing near Puerto Natales, Chile. We had around ten hours of driving through not much. As you can see, we had some interesting picture ops and bathroom breaks, one in the same. We were trying to get to a remote National Park called Cueva de los Manos, but were unable to make it. They nearest town was Bajo Caracoles, Pop. 35, no joke. We stayed at a newly renovated hostel, which was run by the police Chief, Deputy, and Sergeant (all one man!). We got dinner at THE restaurant, and hit the movies (Last of the Mohicans on Laura's laptop in our room).
We got up early the next morning and headed to the caves. They are paintings on the walls of a canyon estimated to be around 9,000 years old (and yes, there was one of a six fingered man). The paintings are quite impressive, and we had a great guide. Afterwards we hit the road again, another ten or so hours of dirt roads. We ran out of gas 2km (seriously 2km, we could have spit on the gas station) before Perito Moreno, good thing we had those gas cans. We wouldn't have pushed it if we didn't have them. We headed south hoping to get the very secluded town of Chalten....
